My Basic Search Engine Optimization Checklist

There are a lot of ranking factors that affect what position your site’s page will appear on Google’s search engine results page. This is my SEO checklist on how to do this.

Since I’m a lone wolf doing my SEO, here is my list of things that I check and do before anything else. First up, this is my On-Page SEO checklist.

1. Keyword Research

I should look for 2 to 3 keywords to target for each post. I would just check if there is at least 50 search volume a month and have a lower difficulty to rank for.

I usually use ubersuggest.com and the Keywords Everywhere browser plug-in to do this. These two should be added in your SEO tools checklist.

2. Article Length

As much as possible I would try and write an article with at least 800 words. My best-case scenario would be writing an article with more than 1,500 words.

If you’re wondering if I look into keyword density and stuff, I don’t in my initial writing. After I publish the article, I will then go back and check on this and see how I can improve it.

3. Title or H1 Tag

I have to make sure to create an appealing or interesting title for the article. Since I usually do list-type articles, I would add a number at the beginning of the title.

An example would be 10 Best or 8 Amazing and then add the keyword I’m targeting. It’s important to add the exact match keyword on your title.

4. Use H2 Tags

The H2 tags are the sub-headings on your article. An example will be like this article. The sub-headings like “Use H2 Tags” should be used as my H2.

5. Use Bold Font on Main Keyword

I’m not sure with this but I’ve read and watched some SEO tutorial videos saying that this will also help with my on-page optimization. I will look within the article my exact keyword or very similar match to it and bold the text.

I only do this once for the whole article.

6. Internal Linking

I add at least 1 link on my post to another post within my website. This should be related to the article and should flow smoothly within the article body.

7. Outbound Link

I would also add at least 1 to 3 outbound links going to highly reputable sites. An example will be a word that needs more explanation that’s not found on my site.

Most of the time, I will link to Wikipedia which has tons of information on different subjects.

8. Check Grammar and Spelling Errors

I use Grammarly for this. It’s a browser extension tool that will help you with your grammar and spelling. There is a paid version but the free version works fine for me.

9. Adding A Conclusion

I try as much as possible to add a conclusion at the end of my articles. If I can ask a question to my readers at the end, the better. It should help with the site’s engagement.

10. Featured Image

I always add a featured image for the post. I would keep it below 100Kb and would add an alt text on it.

It is also better to add relevant images to your post but when I tried adding more images, the site speed drops. Maybe I should look into getting a new hosting provider.

So for now, I’m just keeping a single image which is the featured image.

11. Updating Short Keyword-rich URL

Before publishing my article, I would change first the URL of the post. I will remove non-relevant words and just keep the main keywords as much as possible.

An example is 10 Best Recipes That I Would Like To Cook Every Summer. I will change the URL to best-recipes-cook-summer. This makes the link URL of the post shorter which Google loves.

12. Embed Videos

This is at the end of my list because I should do this but don’t have much time for it. I would just create a video version of the article, upload it on Youtube, and then embed it on the article.

More things can be done with my on-page SEO but these are just the ones I can barely do on my own to keep up with my schedule.

Here is my list for my off-page SEO. I have a small list for this because I don’t have much time to work on this at the moment. I’m currently prioritizing content creation.

Maybe in the future, if I’m able to build a team, I would get into more on this.

13. Social Posts

As soon as I’ve published a new post, I would share them on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. There are other social sites but I keep these 3 and use them consistently for now.

14. Other Social Sites

I try to sometimes post on Reddit. I try to not spam too much on this because the community here is very active. They can easily spot users who are just self-promoting their sites.

Youtube is another one but I don’t have enough time to create the videos for the articles.

15. Blog Commenting

I don’t do this often but when I do, I only pick the ones that are very relevant to my post. It also balances out my backlinks if I’m already having too many do-follow links.

16. Guest Posting

This should be my priority in my off-page search engine optimization. This is something I need to work on more because guest posting takes time in creating the articles as well as reaching out to other sites to guest post on.

This is one of the most important thing on my SEO checklist which I’m taking for granted.

17. Answering Online Questions

I search for questions that I can answer based on the article I’ve written. I usually just check Quora for this.

I will directly answer them their question and try to naturally place a link that will be used as a resource for my answer.

Conclusion

Now, if you’re asking if my SEO plan works? The quick answer is NO, not yet. The main reason for this is inconsistency on my off-page game and time or age of the posts.

But I’m very positive that given the time, some of my articles will eventually get organic traffic. Hopefully, if everything goes well, I can scale this up and build an SEO team.
