Low Purine Diet

Group 1 – Select from these Foods

1. Fruits
2. Vegetables except those listed in Group 2
3. Breads
4. Cereals and cereal products
5. Dairy Products such as milk, cream, yoghurt, cheese, eggs. Just bear in mind the high fat content of most dairy products.
6. Gelatin (gulaman)
7. Sugars and syrups
8. Tea and coffee


Group 2 – Use these foods in moderation

1. Meat
2. Meat soup and broth
3. Poultry
4. Legumes such as beans, peas, lentils
5. Fish except those listed in Group 3
6. Fats
7. Oatmeal
8. Poultry
9. Seafoods such as crabs, oysters, eel, and shrimps
10. Vegetables such as asparagus, spinach, mushroom, and cauliflower

Group 3 – Avoid these foods

1. Anchovies
2. Brains
3. Herring (tamban, tawilis, tunsoy, lapad, silinyasi)
4. Mackarel (alumahan, hasa-hasa, tanigue)
5. Mussels (tahong)
6. Meat extracts
7. Internal organs such as liver, kidney, and pancreas

Although it has nothing to do with purines, most nutritionists agree that people at any stage of gout should refrain from drinking alcohol because it can raise uric acid levels. Instead, drink non-alcoholic fluids, especially water, for they help remove it.
